The metric system originated in france in the 18th century by a chemist called Lavoisier. The metric system is basically a system that converts all sorts of measurements to another from km to m and cm as well as litre to metres etc. That is the wonder of the metric system unifying all the different measurements in the world in to two words used by most countries on earth, refined over 214 years.
In the past, disputes broke out all over the place due to merchants, citizens and tax collectors trying to rip off one another. Later, kings and queens unified countries and established 3 types of currency in their country, mainly accomplished by European Countries near the end of the 18th century. This resulted in fewer disputes among the citizens and merchants, but tourists and travellers were still vulnerable to scams. The leaders of the French revolutionary governments decided to create a brand new system that would dominate the whole world.
In 1791 the first official attempt to create the metric system began, directed by the French revolution. However, construction was slow as they were trying to find a logical and practical unit for the new system. The other nations soon noticed France trying to create a new metric system and the importance of the new international system was soon recognized. Variations of the system soon spread to throughout the world, first reaching non-english speaking countries and making its way towards English speaking countries.
